    Please provide some data on the Spanish market for coffee.
    I would like to obtain some statistics on the consumption of coffee in Spain.

    Prior to 1980 the Spanish market was tightly regulated. In 1979 green coffee imports were just over 1,800,000 60-kilo bags, with little import/export of processed coffee. Following liberalisation the market has expanded strongly with 2004 green coffee imports now more than double at 3,770,000 bags. Imports for 2005 are estimated at about 4 million bags or 240,000 tonnes.

    The share of arabica in green coffee imports today stands at about 39% - that of robusta at about 61%. In 2004 the main suppliers were Vietnam with 34%, Brazil 18%, Uganda 9%, and Colombia, Cote d'Ivoire and India each with 6%. The share of Vietnam (robusta) has been growing strongly in recent years.

    It should be noted that intra-European Union trade in both green and processed coffee has in general shown strong growth in recent years - Spain is no exception. In 2004 the country exported 346,000 bags of green coffee, as well as 93,000 bags of roasted coffee and 363,000 bags of mostly soluble coffee. (All quantities are given in GBE = green bean equivalent). Roasted and soluble exports mostly went to Portugal, France, Germany and Switzerland. This redistribution business appears to be quite lucrative: Spain's 2004 green bean imports were valued at about USD 1,000 per tonne CIF with exports bringing in about USD 1,500/tonne FOB. Soluble exports are growing at some 20% per annum, thereby possibly explaining in part the rise in robusta imports.

    In 2004 Spain also imported 178,000 bags GBE of roasted coffee, and 60,000 bags GBE of soluble and extracts. Notable also is the growth in the importation of decaffeinated coffee, mostly from Germany. This is no doubt due to the growing consumption of roasted, decaffeinated coffee, currently estimated to be about 15% of total roasted coffee consumption.

    The International Coffee Organization (www.ico.org) estimates 2004 per capita consumption at 4.03 kg. This compares with, for example, 4.44 kg in Portugal, 5.05 kg in France and 7.39 kg in Germany.

    Roasted coffee represents about 83% of the total domestic market - soluble about 17%.In home consumption is estimated at close to 58% of total consumption. Roast and ground coffee accounts for about 92% of in home consumption - whole beans therefore only about 8%. Out of home consumption, estimated at around 42% of the total, is mostly in the form of espresso - in 2004 the Spanish Coffee Federation estimated that there were some 300,000 catering establishments serving coffee.

    Finally, the Spanish market is notable also for its use of Mezclas: blends of torrefacto and regular coffee. Torrefacto itself is made from roasting regular coffee with sugar.
